Havnepladsen Ballet (Harbor Square Ballet) Aarhus, Denmark (2017)
In Havnepladsen Ballet (Harbor Square Ballet), Maya Stovall staged and documented performances and discussions in the middle of a Jeppe Hein fountain in the largest harbor in Scandinavia, during Aarhus's summer as a European Capital of Culture, which coincided with the contentious politics of the EU and US, and the beginning of Trump's unusual presidency.
Discussions of city life, US and EU politics, and the desires and thinking of the people in the harbor were fraught with questions that undermined the superficially utopic scenery of the fountain. The artist, again, raises more questions than anything, and meditates on space, place, and how we live in the world.
The series includes video and photography works.
