BODIES OF WORK > Liquor Store Theatre, Detroit, USA (2014-2017)

Liquor Store Theatre is Maya Stovall's four-years-running, four-volume, thirty-plus video episode meditation on city life in the neighborhood where she lived at the time.

In Liquor Store Theatre, the artist staged and documented performances and discussions in the streets, sidewalks, and parking lots surrounding the eight liquor stores in the McDougall-Hunt zone. The result was a bubbling up of the questions, desires, thinking, and reflections of the people of the neighborhood -- and questions of human existence and contemporary life itself.

The series includes video, photography, a monograph, and installation works.

Liquor Store Theatre is the artist's Ph.D. dissertation work and was included in the Whitney Biennial 2017.
